Credits gained from completing this course may be counted towards the 'free choice credit' component of most degree programmes. Successful students will receive certificates in addition to their credits. Alternatively, students may choose only to sit the end-of-course examination which is on a non-credit basis. Successful examination candidates are awarded certificates.

Aims
This course aims to:

  • Develop learners' basic skills and knowledge in English reading and writing;
  • Enhance learners' English proficiency in reading and writing in academic, social and workplace contexts.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Linguistic foundations of reading and writing
  • Essential strategies for effective reading and writing
  • Reading and writing effectively in social and persuasive contexts
  • Reading and writing skills for academic study
  • Written communication skills in the workplace

Learning support
This course involves 150 study hours. There will be eight two-hour tutorials.

Assessment
There will be three assignments and a final examination which will cover the two language skills of reading and writing. Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
